Sports Minister Kofi Adams has questioned the financial management of Ghana’s participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, comparing the spending under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Adams, the NPP spent GH¢66 million during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, while the NDC spent GH¢55 million and advanced beyond the group stage in its own comparison.
“NPP spent ₵66 million at the 2022 World Cup group stage, we [NDC] spent ₵55 million and advanced beyond it, so who was more prudent?” Adams asked.
His remarks have brought renewed attention to the cost of Ghana’s participation in international football tournaments and how public funds allocated to the national team are managed.
The comparison raises questions about expenditure, performance and financial accountability in Ghanaian football. However, determining which administration managed the funds more prudently would require a closer examination of the spending records, what the amounts covered and the circumstances surrounding each tournament.
The figures and comparison reflect Adams’ statement and would need to be assessed against official financial records for a full picture.
