Tension has returned to La Pleasure Beach as residents, traders and political leaders protest the demolition of beachfront businesses in Accra. The demonstration has increased pressure on the government to address the losses suffered by business owners and workers following the October 2, 2026, demolition exercise.

Organised by the Ga-Dangme Progressive Front under the slogan “Aaagbe Wɔ Demo”, the protest brought together affected traders and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures, including National Organiser Titus Glover and Greater Accra Regional Chairman Dr Bernard Oko Boye. The protesters want the government to intervene, provide fair compensation and help displaced businesses find a way to resume their operations.

NPP Leaders Demand Action Over La Beach Demolition

Titus Glover appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and help resolve the dispute. He also poured libation during the demonstration, seeking traditional intervention in the matter. His presence, alongside other NPP leaders, has added political pressure to the growing controversy.

Dr Bernard Oko Boye also called for the resignation of La Dadekotopon MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah. He questioned her continued presence in government amid the destruction of businesses within her constituency. The call has intensified public scrutiny of local political leadership and raised questions about consultation with residents before the demolition took place.

Traders Count Their Losses After October 2 Demolition

The La Pleasure Beach demolition took place on October 2 under National Security supervision following a request from Labadi Beach Hotel, according to the supplied report. Several businesses, including restaurants and bars, were affected, leaving owners and workers uncertain about their next steps.

For many traders, the damage goes beyond buildings and equipment. Business owners say they invested heavily in their operations, which provided jobs and supported families in the community. Some also face outstanding loans and other financial commitments, making the loss of their businesses even more painful.

The Coalition of La Associations has demanded compensation and a transparent assessment of the losses at La Pleasure Beach and Laboma Beach Resort. A fair assessment could help establish the extent of the damage and guide discussions on possible support for affected businesses.

The protesters are calling for meaningful engagement with the affected community, compensation for business owners and support for displaced workers. They also want clarity on the future use of the beachfront. Although land, security and environmental concerns have featured in discussions about the demolition exercises, residents insist that authorities must also consider livelihoods and community interests.

The coming days may prove important in determining whether the government and relevant institutions will engage the affected traders and explore a lasting solution. For the people of La, the issue is not only about demolished businesses but also about protecting jobs, investments and family incomes. The big question remains whether dialogue and compensation will follow, or whether tensions over the La Pleasure Beach demolition will continue to grow.
