President John Dramani Mahama has directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to organise accountability engagements in their respective jurisdictions.

The directive applies to regions where the President has already undertaken the Presidential Accountability Series.

The engagements will be held twice a year through town hall meetings, giving residents the opportunity to ask questions and seek information about government programmes and projects in their communities.

MMDCEs will be expected to account for their assemblies’ development plans, government flagship programmes and the use of public funds, including the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

Other areas to be discussed include infrastructure, sanitation, education, healthcare, social protection, local economic development, revenue mobilisation, youth programmes and projects for vulnerable groups.

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has directed MMDCEs to ensure that the engagements are broad-based and include traditional leaders, Assembly Members, religious leaders, civil society groups, youth and women’s organisations, the media and members of the public.

Regional Coordinating Councils will coordinate and monitor the exercises, while the Ministry may also participate in selected engagements as part of its oversight responsibilities.
