When the bulldozers rolled into La Pleasure Beach recently, they did not just crush wooden shacks and rusted gates. They flattened the daily bread of hundreds of local youth who depend on the ocean breeze and weekend revellers to survive.

Earning a living along our iconic coastline is hard enough, but waking up to see your livelihood reduced to rubbles without a clear alternative can drive anyone crazy.

Out of pure anger, one disgruntled worker dropped a shocking warning that shook everyone who heard it. He bluntly stated that if authorities want them to steal, they will gladly do so and even physical “kwashey” unsuspecting foreigners visiting our shores. While venting frustration is completely normal when you are hungry and confused, threatening innocent tourists spells serious trouble for our booming local tourism sector.

Tourism remains a major pillar for Ghana, bringing in foreign exchange and creating jobs for countless families across the country. If visitors start running for their lives because a few desperate youth decide to take the law into their own hands, the entire economy takes a massive hit. Government agencies and municipal authorities must quickly step in with proper resettlement plans rather than just chasing people away like common pests.

Ignoring the cries of these displaced beach workers is like playing chess with a venomous snake inside a small room. We cannot preach safety and hospitality to the international community while leaving our own youth stranded in extreme poverty with zero options. True progress demands empathy, meaningful dialogue, and swift alternative employment so that nobody feels pushed to the edge of crime.
