President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP), a major industrial development project aimed at accelerating Ghana’s industrialisation agenda, creating jobs and strengthening the country’s position as a leading manufacturing and export hub in West Africa.
The sod-cutting ceremony, held in Tema on Tuesday, June 30, marked the beginning of what government describes as a transformative public-private partnership designed to expand industrial capacity, attract investment and integrate Ghanaian businesses into regional and global value chains.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama said industrialisation is no longer simply a policy option but an economic necessity for Ghana’s long-term development. He stressed that building a strong manufacturing sector is essential for creating sustainable employment opportunities, increasing exports and reducing the country’s dependence on imported goods.
The President urged all stakeholders involved in the project to remain committed to delivering a world-class industrial enclave that reflects Ghana’s economic ambitions.
He noted that the development aligns with the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who established the Tema industrial area as a foundation for the country’s industrial transformation decades ago.
According to President Mahama, the Tema Integrated Industrial Park represents an important step toward revitalising Ghana’s manufacturing sector while creating new opportunities for local businesses to compete across Africa and beyond.
The industrial park is expected to serve as a major centre for manufacturing, processing, logistics and export-oriented industries.
Situated approximately seven kilometres from the Tema Port, the 83.5-hectare facility has been strategically positioned to support industrial production while providing businesses with efficient access to one of West Africa’s busiest seaports.
The government believes the location will significantly enhance Ghana’s competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), allowing manufacturers to access larger regional markets with improved logistics and reduced transportation costs.
Officials say the project will provide modern industrial infrastructure capable of attracting both local and international investors seeking to establish production facilities in Ghana.
The park is also expected to support value addition in agriculture, manufacturing and other productive sectors while encouraging technology transfer and industrial innovation.
Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, described the project as a strategic investment that will strengthen Ghana’s industrial base and reinforce the country’s reputation as a preferred investment destination within the sub-region.
She said the industrial park is expected to attract significant private sector investment while creating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
According to the Minister, expanding industrial infrastructure remains a key priority for government as it seeks to diversify the economy and reduce unemployment through increased local production.
She added that the project forms part of broader efforts to position Ghana as a regional manufacturing hub capable of supplying both domestic and international markets.
Government believes the Tema Integrated Industrial Park will help improve industrial productivity by providing manufacturers with modern infrastructure, reliable logistics and better access to export markets.
The initiative is also expected to encourage collaboration between public institutions and private investors to support long-term economic growth.
Industry observers have noted that Ghana’s proximity to major regional markets, combined with AfCFTA opportunities, makes investments in industrial parks increasingly important for boosting exports and strengthening regional trade.
The launch of the Tema Integrated Industrial Park comes as the government continues to prioritise industrialisation as one of the key drivers of economic transformation.
Officials believe that expanding manufacturing capacity will contribute to higher economic growth, increased foreign direct investment and improved livelihoods through job creation.
The project also supports Ghana’s broader objective of developing competitive industries capable of producing higher-value goods for both local consumption and export.
As construction begins, government has expressed confidence that the industrial park will become one of the country’s flagship economic projects, helping to transform Tema into an even stronger industrial and logistics hub while contributing significantly to Ghana’s long-term economic development.
