Mahama Pardons 863 Convicted Persons for Ghana’s 70th

President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The pardon was granted under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultation with the Council of State.

The beneficiaries include 819 first offenders, 13 people aged 70 and above, and six seriously ill prisoners who have been granted outright release.

The President has also commuted the death sentences of 11 convicted persons to life imprisonment, while six people serving life sentences will have their sentences reduced to 20 years.

The decision forms part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary and is described as an act of mercy and national reflection.
