MoMo and GhIPSS Launch Campaign to Help Drivers Build Safer Digital Transport Businesses

MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MoMo), in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), has launched the Ride with MoMo campaign to help commercial drivers transition from cash based transactions to safer, traceable, and more formal digital payment systems.

The initiative aims to promote financial inclusion while supporting the growth of Ghana’s transport sector by encouraging drivers to adopt digital payment solutions through the GhQR platform. The campaign began in Accra before expanding to Ho in the Volta Region through a nationwide roadshow.

According to MobileMoney Fintech Limited, the programme is designed to help drivers build sustainable businesses by improving payment security, simplifying financial management, and creating reliable transaction records that can support future access to financial services.

The campaign brings together key stakeholders from the transport and financial sectors, including ride hailing operators, transport unions, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the National Communications Authority (NCA), financial institutions, and other industry partners.

The collaboration seeks to encourage widespread adoption of the MoMo Merchant Wallet and GhQR payment platform, providing drivers with convenient tools for accepting digital payments from passengers.

Speaking at the launch in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited, Shaibu Haruna, said the initiative responds to the everyday challenges commercial drivers face when handling cash.

He explained that digital payments offer benefits beyond convenience by helping drivers separate personal and business income, maintain accurate financial records, and establish transaction histories that may improve their chances of accessing loans and other financial products.

According to Mr. Haruna, many transport operators struggle with informal financial practices that make it difficult to demonstrate business performance when seeking credit or expanding their operations. Digital payment records can provide the financial documentation required by banks and other lending institutions.

He noted that the Ride with MoMo campaign is intended to promote safer transport businesses while helping drivers become active participants in Ghana’s growing digital economy.

Under the initiative, ride hailing drivers, taxi operators, haulage drivers, and Pragya riders will be encouraged to register for the MoMo Merchant network. This will enable passengers to make payments by scanning a GhQR code using the MoMo App or any compatible digital payment application.

The use of GhQR technology allows customers to complete transactions quickly without exchanging physical cash, reducing security risks associated with carrying large sums of money.

MobileMoney Fintech Limited believes digital payments will also improve transparency within the transport industry by creating electronic transaction records that benefit both drivers and passengers.

The campaign forms part of broader efforts to promote financial inclusion across Ghana by expanding access to secure digital payment solutions for individuals and small businesses operating in the informal sector.

Officials say commercial drivers represent an important group within the country’s economy because they handle thousands of daily transactions that can benefit from digital payment systems.

By moving away from cash based transactions, transport operators can reduce the risks of theft, disputes over payments, and errors associated with handling cash while improving overall business efficiency.

The partnership between MoMo and GhIPSS also supports Ghana’s national digital transformation agenda, which encourages greater use of electronic payment systems across public and private sectors.

Stakeholders involved in the programme will provide education and practical demonstrations to help drivers understand how to register, receive payments, and manage their businesses using digital financial tools.

The organisers expect the campaign to increase awareness of digital payment solutions while strengthening confidence in secure electronic transactions among transport operators.

They also believe wider adoption of the GhQR platform will contribute to greater financial inclusion by bringing more transport businesses into the formal financial system.

As the campaign expands beyond Accra and Ho to other parts of the country, MobileMoney Fintech Limited and GhIPSS hope more commercial drivers will embrace digital payments as an effective way to improve business operations, enhance customer convenience, and support long term financial growth.

The Ride with MoMo campaign reflects the growing role of digital technology in Ghana’s transport sector and demonstrates how collaboration between financial institutions and transport stakeholders can create practical solutions that benefit businesses, passengers, and the wider economy.
