MTN Ghana has announced plans to donate relief items worth GH¢2.5 million to support families affected by the recent flooding in parts of Accra. The company said the donation aims to help people whose homes and livelihoods were disrupted by the disaster and provide immediate assistance as they recover.
The relief effort will be carried out in partnership with the Multimedia Group and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Together, the three organisations plan to distribute essential supplies to households that suffered losses during the floods.
According to a joint statement issued by MTN Ghana, the donation is intended to meet the urgent needs of affected families by providing food, bedding, hygiene products, and other basic necessities. The company said it hopes the support will ease some of the hardship experienced by flood victims while recovery efforts continue.
The statement was jointly signed by Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, and Madam Efua Falconer, Acting Senior Manager for Corporate Communications.
The relief package includes student mattresses and blankets to provide comfortable sleeping arrangements for displaced families. It also contains mosquito coils and insect repellents to help protect people staying in temporary shelters from mosquito bites and related diseases.
Food supplies will also form a major part of the donation. The items include bags of rice, cooking oil, tomato paste, canned mackerel, sugar, spaghetti, and oats. These products were selected to provide households with essential food supplies during the recovery period.
In addition to food and bedding, MTN Ghana will supply detergents and toiletries to help families maintain proper hygiene while living in temporary accommodation or cleaning their damaged homes.
The company explained that access to clean hygiene products is important after flooding because it helps reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and supports healthier living conditions for affected communities.
The recent floods in Accra caused extensive damage in several communities after heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems. Many homes, businesses, and public facilities were flooded, forcing some families to leave their homes and seek temporary shelter.
The disaster also damaged personal belongings, household items, and food supplies, leaving many residents in need of urgent assistance.
MTN Ghana said the donation reflects its commitment to supporting communities during difficult times and contributing to national disaster response efforts. The company believes businesses have an important role to play in helping communities recover from emergencies.
Through its partnership with NADMO, the relief items will be distributed to people identified as most affected by the floods. NADMO is responsible for coordinating disaster response activities across Ghana and will help ensure the supplies reach the intended beneficiaries.
The Multimedia Group is also supporting the initiative by helping coordinate the relief campaign and raising awareness about the needs of affected communities.
Corporate organisations in Ghana have increasingly partnered with government agencies and humanitarian groups during natural disasters to provide emergency assistance. Such partnerships help speed up relief efforts by combining financial resources, logistics, and community outreach.
Flooding remains one of Ghana’s most frequent natural disasters, especially during the rainy season. Heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, and the improper disposal of waste often contribute to flooding in many urban communities, particularly in Accra.
The government, local authorities, and private organisations continue to encourage better sanitation practices and improved drainage maintenance to reduce the impact of future floods.
MTN Ghana said it hopes its contribution will provide immediate relief while supporting ongoing recovery efforts in the affected communities.
The company also encouraged individuals, organisations, and other businesses to support disaster relief initiatives whenever possible, noting that collective action can make a significant difference in helping families rebuild their lives after emergencies.
As relief operations continue, the GH¢2.5 million donation is expected to provide thousands of essential items to households struggling to recover from the effects of the recent floods. Through this initiative, MTN Ghana, NADMO, and the Multimedia Group aim to bring practical support and hope to families working to rebuild after one of Accra’s latest flood disasters.
