The discussion about changing our electoral calendar has been moving fast across the country.The Constitutional Review Committee chaired by Professor H Kwasi Prempeh recommended moving the presidential term from four to five years.
Government later accepted this proposal alongside a similar extension for members of parliament.Authorities argued that four years is too short to execute big national policies properly.Many citizens wondered if Ghana was finally about to alter the famous 1992 constitution timelines.Political actors began taking strong positions on whether longer tenures would solve our administrative delays.Instead of staying quiet, the opposition decided to break their silence and address the nation clearly.Voters across the regions watched closely to see how this constitutional battle would unfold in public.
The position of the New Patriotic Party
The New Patriotic Party came out strongly to reject the proposed five-year presidential term extension.Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Gushegu lawmaker Sulemana Tampuli Alhassan delivered the party stance.
He stated plainly that the party wants the existing four-year mandate retained without any alterations.According to him, tinkering with the current timelines will weaken the sacred bond of regular accountability.The elephant party believes that four years forces leaders to stay sharp and work hard for citizens.If a government knows it must render accounts in four years, sleeping on the job becomes difficult.
Extending the tenure would only make leaders comfortable and reduce the urgency needed to fix national problems.Therefore, keeping the current cycle protects the power of ordinary voters to hire and fire governments.
Fixing systems instead of changing calendar dates
The opposition argued that administrative delays and transition struggles should not be used to justify term extensions.Solving policy implementation challenges requires institutional efficiency and smart decision-making rather than extra time.When leadership focuses on doing things on time, four years is more than enough to make meaningful progress.Dragging out tenures only delays the day of reckoning for non-performing administrations.
Some governance experts agree that tampering with foundational electoral cycles can sometimes backfire on democratic maturity.Ghana has earned global praise for changing governments peacefully every four years under the current framework.Messing with a working formula might introduce unnecessary tension into our already vibrant political landscape.After all, why fix a car engine that is running smoothly just because the journey feels a bit long?
Balancing reforms and the voice of the citizens
Even though the NPP kicked against the five-year presidential tenure, they agreed to other minor constitutional adjustments.For instance, they supported lowering the age limit for presidential aspirants to thirty years.
That particular shift opens doors for energetic youth participation in the highest office of the land.It proves that the party is open to progressive ideas as long as core accountability structures remain intact.As the constitutional review process continues, public conversations will definitely shape the final outcome of these proposals.
Citizens must remain vigilant and ensure that any future amendments serve the collective interest of the masses.After democracy belongs to the people, and our votes remain the ultimate weapon for holding leaders accountable.
