NPP's Handling of Petition Against Ken Agyapong Will Test Party Unity Ahead of 2028, Says Dr. Ampaabeng

Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exercise caution in handling the petition seeking disciplinary action against former Assin Central MP and former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, warning that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the party’s unity and public image ahead of the 2028 general elections.

His remarks come at a time when internal tensions within the NPP have become increasingly visible following recent clashes among party supporters during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The petition against Kennedy Agyapong has further intensified debates within the party, with many members closely watching how the leadership responds.

Some NPP members have filed a petition requesting the dismissal of Kennedy Agyapong over alleged anti-party conduct. In response, the party has referred the matter to its National Disciplinary Committee for investigation.

The committee, chaired by former Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako Atta, has been tasked with reviewing the allegations and presenting its findings to the National Council, which will make the final decision on the matter.

Reacting to the development, Dr. Ampaabeng stressed that the disciplinary process should not be viewed as merely a case involving one individual. According to him, the decision will influence the morale of party supporters and shape public confidence in the NPP as it prepares for the next national elections.

He noted that whatever decision the party reaches will send a strong message to its members and the Ghanaian public about how internal disagreements are managed.

“Whatever gets decided in the coming days won’t just affect Kennedy. It will ripple into party unity, grassroots morale, and how much confidence the public still has in us heading into 2028,” Dr. Ampaabeng stated in a social media post.

He observed that the petition has generated widespread discussions across party circles and on social media, particularly following the recent confrontations between rival supporters during the NEC meeting.

Dr. Ampaabeng described Kennedy Agyapong as a political figure whose popularity extends beyond traditional party structures. He argued that the former presidential aspirant commands significant support among young people, entrepreneurs, and many ordinary Ghanaians, making him an important political asset to the NPP.

According to him, the party should carefully consider the broader political consequences before taking any disciplinary action that could alienate a significant section of its support base.

He urged party leaders to put aside emotions, personal differences and internal rivalries, focusing instead on preserving party cohesion.

The former deputy finance minister also encouraged members to allow the disciplinary committee to carry out its work independently while ensuring that fairness, transparency and due process guide every stage of the investigation.

Political observers believe the case comes at a critical moment for the NPP as it seeks to rebuild unity following the 2024 elections and prepare for another highly competitive contest in 2028.

The party has recently faced growing internal divisions, with disagreements over leadership, campaign strategy and the future direction of the party becoming increasingly public.

Analysts say the handling of Kennedy Agyapong’s case could either strengthen confidence in the party’s internal democratic processes or deepen existing divisions if sections of the membership perceive the outcome as unfair.

As the National Disciplinary Committee begins its work, many party supporters are expected to closely monitor the process and await the National Council’s final decision.

The outcome is likely to play an important role in shaping the NPP’s efforts to maintain party unity and restore confidence among its grassroots supporters ahead of the next electoral cycle.
