England’s goalless draw against Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has generated headlines beyond the action on the pitch after a pre-match interaction involving England defender Djed Spence and Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey sparked widespread debate on social media.
The Group L encounter in Boston ended 0-0, but much of the discussion after the final whistle centered on an apparent handshake snub and the hostile reception Partey received from sections of the crowd throughout the match.
The controversy began before kick-off during the traditional pre-match handshake between the two teams. Video footage circulating online appeared to show Spence walking past Partey without offering a handshake while keeping one of his hands in his pocket.
Although the incident lasted only a few seconds and television coverage only partially captured the moment, alternative camera angles quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting speculation about whether the England defender had deliberately refused to greet the Ghana midfielder.
Neither Djed Spence nor the England Football Association has commented publicly on the incident, leaving fans and football analysts divided over what actually happened.
Some supporters argued the footage clearly showed a deliberate snub, while others suggested the moment may have been misunderstood because of the angle and speed of the exchange.
The silence from the England camp has only fueled further discussion online.
Meanwhile, Thomas Partey faced a difficult atmosphere throughout the match as sections of supporters booed him during the announcement of Ghana’s starting lineup and again whenever he touched the ball during the early stages of the contest.
The Arsenal midfielder was making his first appearance of the tournament after missing Ghana’s opening World Cup match against Panama.
Partey’s participation has attracted significant international attention because of ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom. He has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of rape and sexual assault relating to allegations involving four women between 2020 and 2022. The case remains before the courts, and he is scheduled to stand trial next year.
Because legal proceedings are ongoing, every appearance by the midfielder has continued to attract intense public scrutiny.
His participation in the World Cup also faced logistical challenges earlier in the tournament when he was initially denied entry into Canada ahead of Ghana’s opening fixture. He was later cleared to enter the United States after immigration officials confirmed his travel documentation and visa status.
Despite the attention surrounding him, Partey insisted before the England match that he was fully focused and ready to help Ghana at the World Cup.
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has repeatedly defended his decision to include the experienced midfielder in his squad. The Portuguese coach has maintained that players should be judged by their performances on the field while legal matters are allowed to proceed through the courts. He has also emphasized the principle that every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
On the pitch, Ghana produced one of their strongest defensive displays of the tournament to frustrate England’s attacking players.
The Black Stars remained disciplined throughout the match, limiting England to few clear scoring opportunities and earning an important point in the race to qualify for the knockout stage.
England also defended well, resulting in a tightly contested match that finished without goals.
The draw leaves both teams with everything still to play for heading into the final round of Group L fixtures, where qualification to the Round of 32 remains undecided.
