The Ghana Armed Forces just held the maiden annual Omane Boamah Memorial Lecture at Burma Camp in Accra. It was a powerful gathering to honour the late Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah. He truly showed us what selfless leadership means.
If you live in the capital you already know how a small rain can easily turn our streets into free public swimming pools. Well the military and experts finally had a serious conversation to fix this. They introduced a brilliant concept called Accra Beyond the Floods.
Professor Appeaning Addo spoke during the event and he kept things very real. He explained that our own bad habits mostly cause the terrible floods. People dump rubbish in the gutters and build houses right on the waterways. We cannot always blame nature when we cause the mess ourselves.
The experts proposed a very practical solution to save our beautiful capital city. We need to enforce strict town planning rules and use modern technology to monitor our environment. We must combine good engineering with strong community action to build a climate resilient city.
Dr Boamah loved this country with all his heart and always put the nation first. He believed we should stay here and build our own nation instead of running away. Fixing the flood issues properly is exactly the kind of practical action he would support.
Now the real work begins for every citizen and our city authorities. We must stop throwing pure water rubbers into the open drains and start planting more trees. If we truly want to respect his great legacy we must work as a team to protect our environment.
