Major rehabilitation works have begun at the Lafa water retention basin in Mallam to combat perennial flooding.Years of illegal waste dumping and building encroachment choked this vital natural reservoir. Heavy downpours recently caused severe disasters in surrounding neighborhoods like Weija and Dansoman. State authorities are stepping in firmly to restore proper drainage systems.
The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces deployed heavy machinery to clear compacted garbage at Mallam and Weija. Teams are breaking down tonnes of solid debris before dredging the basin for safe disposal.Officials stressed that unauthorized structures blocking waterways must come down without any delay. Protecting human lives and properties remains the absolute priority for the post-flood mitigation task force.
Engineers warn that unlawful land sales and filling water channels with laterite worsened local vulnerability. Completing this massive excavation project will significantly reduce water blockages during heavy rainstorms.Residents must support community oversight so that buffer zones remain free from future building encroachments.
