The Ghana Revenue Authority has achieved a major milestone in tax collection after deploying artificial intelligence to assess imported goods. GRA Commissioner General Anthony Sarpong revealed that customs revenue jumped to an unprecedented six point one billion Ghana Cedis in July 2026.
Before rolling out the Publican AI platform, customs receipts averaged around four billion Ghana Cedis each month. The deployment of this new tech tool has generated an extra two point one billion Ghana Cedis monthly, proving that digital reforms are paying off.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace, Dr Sarpong explained that full implementation began in April 2026. Revenues grew steadily from four billion Cedis to five point five billion Cedis in June before hitting July’s record figure.
The Commissioner General commended importers, business owners, and GRA personnel for cooperating with the new system. He emphasized that combining technology with human oversight is eliminating under declaration and closing long standing revenue leakages at the ports.
Building on this success, the Authority is preparing to launch major VAT collection reforms to address widespread non compliance. With only four out of ten businesses currently paying VAT properly, new parliament approved electronic devices will soon monitor shop sales across the country.
To encourage compliance, the GRA plans to introduce an exciting consumer reward scheme for citizens who demand official VAT receipts. These combined initiatives signal a new era of transparency and efficiency in Ghana’s revenue administration.
