Ghana’s international relations and domestic anti-corruption efforts are facing a high-stakes stress test. Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has publicly demanded that President John Mahama take a significantly tougher stance against the United States.
In an explosive social media post on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the former lawmaker urged the government to halt all pending and future US extradition requests. He also called for the immediate suspension of bilateral defence cooperation with Washington until former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is returned to face justice.
This dramatic appeal follows a recent victory for Mr. Ofori-Atta in an American immigration court. The US court approved his application to adjust his immigration status, potentially paving the way for him to secure lawful permanent residency status in America.
Ras Mubarak firmly believes that Ghana must leverage its diplomatic relationship with Washington to force a resolution. He explicitly stated that international diplomacy should operate on a strict quid pro quo basis, arguing that it can no longer be business as usual when dealing with Western allies.
The former MP warned the presidency against listening to political moderates who might favor a softer approach. He insisted that the Ghanaian public will not forgive the current administration if they fail to play hardball on this matter. The controversy centers on serious allegations dating back to Mr. Ofori-Atta’s time managing the national purse. He currently stands accused of multiple financial irregularities, most notably a controversial revenue assurance contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited.
State investigators claim that this specific deal resulted in losses exceeding GH¢1.4 billion for the country. The Office of the Special Prosecutor previously attempted to secure an INTERPOL Red Notice against the former minister after he allegedly ignored several official invitations for questioning.
While that notice was ultimately removed by INTERPOL, the state’s criminal case continues. Throughout the entire saga, Mr. Ofori-Atta has firmly maintained his innocence and consistently denied any wrongdoing.
