Six operatives of Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) have been dismissed following an internal investigation into alleged security breaches and gross professional misconduct.
The officers were accused of smuggling mobile phones, phone accessories and restaurant food to detainees by concealing the items in food packages. The alleged acts were reportedly carried out in exchange for financial rewards.
According to the findings of the internal investigation, eight officers were investigated over the matter. Six were dismissed, one was demoted, while the remaining officer was cleared of any wrongdoing.
The disciplinary action highlights the importance of professional conduct, integrity and strict adherence to security procedures among personnel responsible for protecting sensitive national security operations.
The alleged smuggling of unauthorised items to detainees raises concerns about compliance with detention facility regulations and the potential risks associated with security breaches.
Mobile phones and other unauthorised items can create security challenges in detention settings, particularly where access to communication devices is restricted. The alleged exchange of such items for money also raises questions about accountability and the enforcement of internal rules.
The differing outcomes for the eight officers suggest that disciplinary decisions were based on the findings relating to each individual.
The dismissals are a significant disciplinary measure against the six officers found to have breached professional standards, while the demotion of another officer represents a separate sanction. The officer who was cleared was not found culpable in the investigation.
Further details about when the alleged incidents occurred, the identities of the officers and any additional action arising from the investigation were not provided in the information available for this report.
