Public worry is growing fast over the rising number of young children begging for alms around the Tema Community 5 traffic intersection. Concerned residents have called on the Ghana Immigration Service and local authorities to take urgent steps to clear the streets. Leaving vulnerable minors under the scorching sun exposes them to serious road accidents and criminal exploitation.
Children belong in classrooms gaining quality education rather than weaving through moving vehicles to chase coins from motorists. Under Ghana law, including the Children Act, exploitative street begging remains strictly prohibited because it ruins young futures. When adults turn infants into commercial tools at major junctions, the entire society fails its core moral duty.
Collaborative swoops by state security agencies have previously cleared similar syndicates from parts of Accra and Kumasi. Extending these intelligence led rescue operations to Tema will protect innocent minors from ruthless trafficking networks. Concerned citizens must also stop handing cash directly to children at traffic lights to discourage this dangerous trade.
