The long-awaited revitalization of Ghana’s premier petroleum refinery has taken a major step forward. The management of the Tema Oil Refinery has announced the successful delivery of one million barrels of premium Bonga Crude Oil to its coastal facility.
The substantial cargo, which arrived aboard the specialized merchant vessel MT Cap Felix, marks a critical turning point in the state-backed strategy to restore domestic refining capacity and stabilize the national energy grid.
Strategic Partnership with Shell and TCT Enhances Supply
The massive crude oil cargo was purchased directly from global energy giant Shell and supplied through the refinery’s dedicated tolling partner, Fujeirah/Triangle Commodities Trading. This collaborative commercial arrangement actively supports the operational recovery of the plant while ensuring a highly consistent, uninterrupted supply of petroleum products to the local Ghanaian marketplace.
The processing of this specific Bonga consignment will yield an extensive array of high-value refined products. Local consumers and commercial distributors can expect an increased domestic supply of gasoline, diesel, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, aviation turbine kerosene, and fuel oil.
By processing high-yielding, low-sulphur crude locally, the refinery aims to improve national energy security and systematically reduce the country’s heavy reliance on expensive imported refined petroleum products. Refinery executives expressed profound gratitude to the government, financial partners, and regulatory bodies for facilitating this operational resurgence. Management also reaffirmed its commitment to long-term commercial sustainability, strict environmental responsibility, and transforming the facility into a highly competitive energy hub for the entire West African sub-region.
