The Upper East Regional Police Command has successfully processed 80 suspects following a major anti-crime operation across the region. This intensive, intelligence-led exercise occurred between May 25 and June 3, 2026, targeting known criminal hotspots.
Authorities collaborated with the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team to execute this sweep. The effort focused on areas including Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Tongo, Bongo, and parts of the Nabdam District to enhance public safety.
Police data reveals a breakdown of the arrests across these specific locations:
- Officers apprehended 12 suspects, including three Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian, at Zuarungu.
- The Bongo area saw the highest volume of arrests, with 34 individuals taken into custody.
- Operations in the Nabdam District resulted in 14 arrests, while 20 additional suspects were picked up in Bolgatanga.
Preliminary investigations suggest that many of these individuals engaged in the sale and use of narcotic substances. The police also uncovered various criminal activities that had previously eluded detection in these communities.
The operation yielded a significant recovery of illicit items that highlight the scale of the criminal presence. Officers seized several dangerous weapons and prohibited goods during the coordinated searches.
Key items recovered during the sweep include the following:
- Police retrieved three rounds of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition and two motorbikes in Bongo.
- Officers seized parcels of suspected Indian hemp, foreign cigarettes, and a casino jackpot machine part in the Nabdam District.
- The team recovered three motorbikes, including an unregistered Haojue model, in Bolgatanga.
All 80 suspects currently remain in police custody. Authorities are now processing the group for court appearances as investigations continue into the scope of their activities.
This security operation forms part of a broader commitment by the Ghana Police Service to combat violent crime. The regional command remains focused on monitoring identified hotspots to prevent future illicit activities.
These efforts reflect a proactive approach to maintaining peace and order within the Upper East Region. Residents should expect sustained police visibility as the authorities continue to prioritize community safety through intelligence-led policing.
