The Upper East Regional Police Command recently conducted a massive anti-crime operation that resulted in the arrest of 80 individuals. This coordinated exercise involved the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team to ensure maximum impact across the region.
The intelligence-led operation spanned from May 25 to June 3, 2026, targeting known criminal hotspots. Areas including Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Tongo, Bongo, and the Nabdam District faced intense scrutiny during this security sweep.
Police teams apprehended 12 suspects, consisting of eight men and four women, during the Zuarungu leg of the operation. This group included three Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian.
The Bongo district saw the largest number of arrests, with 34 people taken into custody. This group included 32 males and two females.
Operations in the Nabdam District resulted in 14 arrests, including 12 men and two women. Additionally, 20 suspects were picked up during the sweep in Bolgatanga. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were primarily involved in the sale and use of narcotic substances. Other criminal activities also triggered the attention of the police teams.
The police successfully recovered a wide range of illegal items during the exercise. In Tongo, officers seized a motorcycle, foreign cigarettes, condoms, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The search in Bongo yielded two motorbikes and three rounds of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition. Nabdam District recoveries included parcels of dried leaves, suspected narcotic drinks, and an unregistered motorbike.
Police also seized a casino jackpot machine part during the Nabdam operation. Bolgatanga recoveries featured three motorbikes and another casino jackpot machine. All 80 suspects remain in police custody as investigations proceed. Authorities confirm that the group will be processed for court once the documentation is complete.
This security operation aims to curb criminal activity and improve the overall safety of the Upper East Region. The police command remains committed to monitoring identified hotspots to prevent further illicit trade.
Residents should expect continued vigilance from security services in the coming weeks. Maintaining peace and order remains the top priority for the regional command during these intensive patrols.
