Ghana cannot keep standing on the sidelines while green investments pass us by. The Minister-designate for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, made this bold declaration during her parliamentary vetting on August 27, 2026. She insists that our country must move beyond empty promises and start practically securing real funds from global climate initiatives.
For years, African nations have contributed less than 4% of global greenhouse emissions, yet our communities suffer the worst impacts of changing weather patterns. Winning in this green economy requires smarter moves. Dr. Zanetor urges Ghana to leverage South-South cooperation and tap into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to turn eco-friendly ideas into real economic growth.
While pushing for climate action, Dr. Zanetor also issued a strong warning about modern technology. She described artificial intelligence as a double-edged sword that offers massive opportunities but carries serious risks if left unchecked.
Smart tools can monitor illegal mining sites and track soil changes across rural farms. However, technology alone will not save our lands. Without strong human oversight, strict legislation, and proper technical training, algorithms can easily fail or cause unintended harm.
Written laws on paper will not control emerging technologies. Real safety comes from building human capacity across local institutions so everyday citizens and experts can govern digital tools responsibly.
Ghana is taking bold steps toward a greener, smarter economy, but balance remains critical. By demanding our fair share of climate finance and enforcing strict guardrails on artificial intelligence, Ghana can protect both its rich environment and its digital future.
