The legal battle concerning Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, took a fresh twist when his much anticipated bail application suffered a prompt adjournment. Lawyers representing the prominent politician were expected to move the motion in court on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Unfortunately, both his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, and the applicant himself failed to show up for the court session.

The sudden absence threw the courtroom proceedings into an unexpected loop, leaving onlookers whispering about the next legal move. Gary Nimako stood in to represent the New Patriotic Party’s legal interests during the brief appearance. Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai proudly represented the state to counter any sudden legal maneuvers. Court officials later announced that the presiding judge was unavailable due to current judicial schedules for the week.

This particular legal drama follows a heavy ruling delivered by the Accra High Court that handed the politician a twenty-year jail term. The severe conviction stemmed from illegal mining offenses tied directly to an active concession located at Samreboi. Wontumi’s defense team subsequently rushed to file for bail pending the determination of their ongoing appeal. However, state prosecutors strongly opposed the request, labeling him a potential flight risk who might evade justice.

Judicial authorities have now rescheduled Wontumi’s hearing for October 15, 2026. Until that date arrives, the embattled regional chairman remains locked away while his legal team regroups for the next phase. Both sides are expected to return fully prepared to argue whether temporary freedom should be granted under strict judicial supervision.
