The spokesperson for Chairman Wontumi, Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, says it is not yet confirmed whether his client is among the 863 convicted persons pardoned by President John Dramani Mahama.
President Mahama announced the presidential pardon on Monday, October 5, 2026, as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
However, Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah said Wontumi’s team has not received any official communication confirming his inclusion.
He said the team will wait for the relevant authorities to provide details before making any conclusion about Wontumi’s status.
“We don’t have the fine details yet and so if we are yet to be communicated to, we will let the public know,” Dr Palgrave said.
He added that if Wontumi’s name is included, the team expects it could fall under the special recommendation or petition category.
The presidential pardon covers different categories of convicted persons, including first offenders, elderly prisoners and seriously ill persons. Some sentences have also been commuted or reduced.
Dr Palgrave said Wontumi’s legal team is also focused on securing bail for him on October 15 while his appeal is being considered.
Until official confirmation is received, Wontumi’s inclusion among the 863 beneficiaries remains unconfirmed.
