The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has presented relief items and financial assistance to 297 military personnel and civilian employees affected by the devastating floods of June 29.
The support package was distributed during a ceremony held at Nicholson Stadium in Burma Camp, Accra, as part of efforts to ease the hardship faced by officers, soldiers and civilian staff whose homes and personal property were damaged by the floods that affected Accra and other parts of the country.
Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, presented the relief items to the beneficiaries and reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to the welfare of its personnel during periods of hardship.
He said the assistance demonstrated the military’s solidarity with officers, soldiers and civilian employees who suffered losses as a result of the heavy rains and flooding.
According to Lieutenant General Agyapong, the floods affected many military families, particularly those living outside official barracks, leaving several households with damaged property and significant financial challenges.
He explained that the intervention was intended to provide immediate relief while helping affected personnel recover from the impact of the disaster.
The beneficiaries received a combination of household essentials, replacement uniforms and financial assistance jointly provided by the Ghana Armed Forces and NADMO. Officials said the relief package was designed to address both immediate household needs and the cost of replacing work related items lost during the floods.
Lieutenant General Agyapong praised NADMO for its collaboration and timely support, noting that partnerships between national institutions remain essential in responding effectively to natural disasters.
He also commended officers and personnel involved in rescue and emergency operations during the flooding, highlighting their dedication to protecting lives and property despite many of them being victims themselves.
The Defence Chief encouraged beneficiaries to remain resilient and assured them that the welfare of military personnel would continue to receive priority attention. He said the Ghana Armed Forces would continue working with relevant institutions to provide assistance whenever members of the service faced emergencies.
Officials from NADMO reiterated their commitment to supporting disaster affected communities across the country. They noted that the organisation continues to assess the impact of the June 29 floods and coordinate relief efforts for households, businesses and public institutions affected by the disaster.
The June floods caused widespread destruction in parts of Accra and several other communities following hours of intense rainfall. Homes were submerged, roads became impassable and many families suffered significant losses as floodwaters damaged buildings, vehicles and personal belongings.
Government agencies have since intensified efforts to improve disaster preparedness and strengthen flood mitigation measures to reduce the impact of future heavy rains. Authorities have also continued public awareness campaigns encouraging residents to avoid building on waterways and to keep drainage channels free from waste.
Military personnel have played a key role in national emergency response operations over the years, providing rescue services, logistical support and humanitarian assistance during floods, fires and other disasters. Officials said supporting affected members of the Armed Forces reflects the institution’s commitment to caring for those who dedicate themselves to national service.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the assistance, describing it as timely support that would help them begin rebuilding their homes and replacing essential household items lost during the floods.
The Ghana Armed Forces and NADMO reaffirmed their commitment to working together to provide assistance during emergencies and strengthen disaster response efforts nationwide. Officials emphasized that protecting the welfare of citizens, including members of the security services, remains a priority as Ghana continues to improve its disaster management and resilience strategies.
