President John Dramani Mahama on Friday led the nation in paying its final respects to former Minister of Foreign Affairs and veteran diplomat James Victor Gbeho during a state funeral held at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra.
The solemn ceremony brought together political leaders, diplomats, members of the judiciary, traditional authorities, family members and mourners from across Ghana and beyond to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the country’s most respected public servants.
President Mahama was joined by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as Ghanaians gathered to honour Mr Gbeho, who passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91 after decades of distinguished service to the nation and the international community.
The state funeral attracted several prominent personalities, including former Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba, Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations.
In a tribute delivered on his behalf by Presidential Adviser and Special Aide Joyce Bawa Mogtari, President Mahama described Mr Gbeho as a statesman whose life exemplified patriotism, integrity and unwavering commitment to national development.
The President said the late diplomat belonged to a rare generation of nation builders whose dedication helped shape Ghana’s foreign policy and strengthened the country’s reputation on the global stage.
He praised Mr Gbeho’s distinguished diplomatic career, noting that his leadership, wisdom and professionalism earned him respect both within Ghana and across the international community.
President Mahama said Mr Gbeho devoted his life to promoting peace, cooperation and dialogue, values that continue to define Ghana’s engagement with the rest of the world. He added that the former Foreign Affairs Minister served the nation with humility and honour, leaving behind a legacy that would inspire future generations of diplomats and public servants.
Throughout his long career, Mr Gbeho held several key national and international positions. His contributions to diplomacy and regional cooperation made him one of Ghana’s most accomplished foreign policy experts, earning admiration from colleagues across Africa and beyond.
Speakers at the funeral recalled his commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing Ghana’s interests through diplomacy rather than conflict. Many described him as a calm negotiator whose experience and sound judgement earned him the confidence of leaders throughout the region.
Representatives of the diplomatic community paid tribute to his efforts in promoting regional integration, peaceful dialogue and international cooperation. They noted that his work helped reinforce Ghana’s standing as a respected voice in African and global affairs.
Family members expressed gratitude to the government and the people of Ghana for honouring Mr Gbeho with a state funeral. They thanked friends, colleagues and well wishers for the support shown to the family since his passing.
Religious leaders offered prayers for the late statesman, asking for peace for his soul and comfort for his family. Military honours were also accorded during the ceremony in recognition of his outstanding service to the Republic.
The funeral served not only as a farewell to a distinguished diplomat but also as a celebration of a lifetime dedicated to public service, integrity and national development. Mourners reflected on the values Mr Gbeho embodied, including discipline, patriotism and selfless leadership.
President Mahama urged Ghanaians, particularly younger generations, to emulate the late diplomat’s commitment to excellence, honesty and service to the nation. He said Ghana’s future depends on citizens who place national interest above personal ambition and remain dedicated to building stronger institutions.
As the nation bid farewell to James Victor Gbeho, tributes continued to pour in from political leaders, diplomats and citizens, all recognising his lasting contribution to Ghana’s diplomatic history. His legacy, many said, will continue to inspire those working to strengthen Ghana’s place in regional and international affairs for generations to come.
