The wait is finally over for Ghanaian football fans across the country. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has officially released his 24-man Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and an international friendly against Morocco.
The headline news making waves everywhere is the return of attacking playmaker Mohammed Kudus. After a agonizing seven-month injury layoff that forced him to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, our Starboy is fully fit and ready to drive Ghana’s midfield once again.
Key Returnees Strengthen Black Stars Core
Kudus is not the only high-profile star making a timely comeback to the national setup. Experienced defender Alexander Djiku returns to solidify the backline, while Lorient defender Nathaniel Adjei earns his place after nearly a year away following impressive performances in Ligue 1.
In midfield and attack, Queiroz welcomed back Brighton forward Ibrahim Osman and Sassuolo’s Ibrahim Sulemana. Their inclusion brings vital tactical options and depth to complement key stars like Antoine Semenyo, Ernest Nuamah, and team captain Jordan Ayew.
Fresh Blood Earn Maiden National Call-ups
The technical staff also rewarded strong club form by handing debut call-ups to two talented players. SV Elversberg defender Jan Gyamerah and New York Red Bulls midfielder Ronald Donkor earned their spots after putting in consistent performances for their respective clubs.
Meanwhile, Accra Hearts of Oak shot-stopper Benjamin Asare retained his spot as the sole home-based player in the squad. He joins overseas-based goalkeepers Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Anang to complete the goalkeeping department.
Upcoming Fixtures and Match Schedule
Ghana faces a demanding sequence of matches in the coming weeks. The team kicks off its AFCON qualifying campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday, September 24, before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29. The squad will then travel to Tangier for a high-profile friendly against Morocco on October 4, 2026.
With match fitness and regular playing time being Queiroz’s top selection criteria, these hungry players are set to kick off a new era for Ghanaian football.
