The New Patriotic Party took to the streets of Accra today to protest against the government. Thousands of angry supporters joined the Democracy Under Attack demonstration. They marched straight to the seat of government to deliver a strong message.
Things took a dramatic turn when the protesters finally reached the presidency. The leaders of the political party expected top government officials to meet them. Instead they met Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah waiting to receive their petition.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin did not hide his absolute disappointment. Afenyo Markin told Nana Yaa Jantuah plainly that sending only her was an insult to their massive party. He maintained his respect for her person but completely rejected the political move.
Afenyo Markin boldly stated that nominating a lone staffer to receive their serious grievances amounts to gross disrespect. You can clearly see the logic here because major protests usually attract senior state officials. The decision really made the crowd feel ignored by the current administration.
This bold statement quickly captured the attention of many Ghanaians following the live updates. Political experts note that the government missed a perfect opportunity to show good faith. Sending a senior minister would have easily calmed the rising political tensions today.
The protesters want immediate action regarding the ongoing selective justice happening under this government. They believe state institutions arrest opposition members quickly while government officials walk free. This perceived unfairness is exactly why they organized the massive street protest.
Ghanaians are watching closely to see how the government will respond to the official petition. The clear anger on the streets shows that the political temperature is rising fast. We can only hope both sides find a peaceful way to resolve these deep issues soon.
