Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has clarified the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority’s position on the detention of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Afenyo-Markin said the Minority is not seeking to interfere with EOCO’s investigation into transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.
He stressed that no individual is above the law, including EOCO. However, he questioned the manner in which the MP’s case has been handled.
Afenyo-Markin Raises Concerns
According to the Minority Leader, the treatment of Baffour Awuah appears to be part of what he described as a broader attempt to intimidate critical opposition voices.
He also called for an end to what he described as the misuse of arrest and prosecution to intimidate political opponents or suppress free expression.
Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority’s concerns should not be interpreted as an attempt to stop the ongoing investigation.
Baffour Awuah Reports to EOCO
Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO on October 1, 2026, accompanied by his lawyer and other Members of Parliament.
His appearance followed an Accra High Court warrant authorising his arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation.
EOCO had previously said it invited the MP on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with its investigation. The agency said further legal steps were taken after it said the invitations had not secured his attendance.
The investigation concerns transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. The allegations remain under investigation and have not been established as criminal liability against Baffour Awuah.
Minority Calls for Due Process
Afenyo-Markin has called for the immediate release of the Manhyia South MP while maintaining that the investigation itself should not be prejudged.
He also questioned whether all available parliamentary channels had been exhausted before the arrest warrant was sought.
The Minority Leader’s concerns about political intimidation are his allegation, while EOCO maintains that its actions form part of its lawful investigative responsibilities.
The case remains under investigation as the authorities continue their inquiries.
