The entertainment world is mourning the loss of a true Hollywood tough guy. Vincent Pastore, the veteran actor we all came to love (and maybe fear a little) as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on The Sopranos, has passed away. He was 80 years old.
According to reports, Pastore was found dead in his Bronx home on Saturday, August 1, 2026. A close friend checked on him after he hadn’t been heard from for a few days. While the official cause of death is still under investigation, sources suggest he passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes.
Before he became a mobster on screen, Pastore actually served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He got into acting a bit later in life, landing his first role in his early 40s. But man, did he find his lane! With his burly look and thick Bronx accent, he was a natural for gangster roles, popping up in classics like Goodfellas and Carlito’s Way.
Of course, his big break was playing Tony Soprano’s loyal buddy turned FBI informant. “Big Pussy” is arguably one of the most memorable characters in television history. His manager, Bob McGowan, shared that despite his tough-guy image, Pastore was “the most loyal client” and someone who always had time for charity.
Even after his legendary 30-episode run on The Sopranos, Pastore stayed busy. He racked up almost 200 acting credits, appearing in movies like Gotti and even doing stints on reality TV shows like Celebrity Apprentice.
His Sopranos co-star, Michael Imperioli, summed it up perfectly on Instagram, calling him a “kind-hearted brother.” Pastore leaves behind his daughter, Renee, and a legacy of unforgettable performances that will keep fans quoting him for years to come. Rest in peace, Vinny.
