You might assume taxpayers funded this entire multi-million cedi bill alone. Honestly, state coffers alone rarely stretch far enough during unexpected emergencies. Fortunately, local corporate giants stepped forward to share the heavy financial burden.
Engineers & Planners, the prominent Ghanaian mining and construction firm owned by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, delivered a massive GH¢16 million donation toward the rescue fund.
The central government contributed GH¢33,721,786 from emergency funds, while Ibrahim Mahama’s company plugged the remaining multi-million cedi deficit. IMO, seeing a private local enterprise drop 16 million cedis to save stranded compatriots sets an incredible benchmark for corporate social responsibility.
Rescuing citizens from danger is only half the battle. What happens when traumatized families land back home with zero possessions left? The state ensured every single returnee received direct financial assistance to jumpstart their lives.
The government allocated GH¢10,802,000 specifically for reintegration allowances. Every adult evacuee received GH¢5,000 as a cash grant, plus an extra GH¢500 for local transportation home.

Job Placements: Partnering with local firms to secure over 100 immediate employment opportunities for returnees.
Tragically, the crisis claimed the lives of two nationals. The state spent an additional GH¢84,274 to repatriate their remains for proper burial at home.
Looking at the final ledger, the total rescue package successfully brought 1,964 vulnerable Ghanaians out of harm’s way. Thanks to a combination of state action and Engineers & Planners’ generous GH¢16 million backing, the operation cleared all outstanding liabilities without leaving mounting debts behind.
