The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports suggesting that a student has recently died at Ghana National College, clarifying that the incident being circulated occurred in 2018.

In a statement shared on Friday, November 6, 2026, the Service said no student had died recently at the Cape Coast-based school.

GES urged the public to disregard reports presenting the old incident as a new development, describing their circulation as an attempt to reopen painful memories for the bereaved family.

“No student has passed away at Ghana National College. This particular reported demise occurred in 2018,” the Service stated.

GES warns against misleading reports

The Service expressed concern that the circulation of the old incident could cause renewed distress to the family of the deceased student.

It also said the reports could unfairly damage the reputation of teachers, housemistresses and the school.

GES therefore appealed to the public to verify information before sharing it, particularly when it involves the death of a student or other sensitive incidents in schools.

Background to the 2018 incident

The reports relate to the death of Ruby Teiko, a 17-year-old first-year student of Ghana National College, who died in 2018 after reportedly experiencing severe breathing difficulties during a dormitory inspection at the school’s Elsie Dadzie Hall.

Her family alleged that she complained of difficulty breathing but was asked to wait until the inspection exercise was completed before receiving assistance.

She reportedly collapsed and was taken to Cape Coast Government Hospital, where she died.

The circumstances surrounding her death raised concerns about the school’s response to the medical emergency. The school, however, denied responsibility for her death.

GES clarifies timeline

The latest clarification is intended to correct the impression that another student has died at Ghana National College in 2026.

GES has called on the public and media organisations to avoid circulating the old report without clearly stating when the incident happened.

The Service maintains that the death occurred in 2018 and that reports suggesting a new student has died at the school are misleading.
