Farmers along the White Volta basin are racing against time as authorities warn of an early spillage from Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam.
The National Disaster Management Organisation in the North East Region has alerted local growers that floodwaters could submerge farmlands much earlier than last year’s late August timeline.
North East Regional NADMO Director Tahiru Rafiu confirmed that local farmers face severe crop losses because the water level at the dam is rising rapidly.
Agricultural fields along the riverbanks remain the most vulnerable. Most residents in these communities rely strictly on farming for their daily livelihoods, making crop loss a direct threat to food security.
Once the Burkinabe authorities open the dam gates, floodwaters will take roughly 48 to 72 hours to flow downstream into Ghanaian territory.
Disaster management teams are actively educating local communities to avoid risking their lives trying to save unharvested crops from fast moving floodwaters.
The upcoming spillage threatens major crops such as maize, rice, millet, and vegetables across the White Volta agricultural belt.
