The ongoing battle against illegal gold panning in West Africa has taken another devastating turn. Four illegal miners have lost their lives following the sudden collapse of an unsecured mining pit at Skuumu, near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The tragic workplace accident occurred at approximately 4 pm on Wednesday, throwing the entire rural community into deep mourning.
The physical site of the disaster was actually an abandoned, highly depleted mining concession. The state had recently handed over the area to Logist Group Company Limited to execute essential land reclamation and ecological restoration works. Unfortunately, the victims allegedly sneaked into the restricted zone to look for gold when the loose earth caved in, trapping them completely underground.
Local emergency services and the Ghana Police Service deployed teams to the location immediately to handle the rescue operation. Heavy equipment operators used an excavator on Wednesday evening to retrieve the bodies of the deceased from the deep mud.
Authorities have identified the leader of the group as Solomon Amadevor, while the official identities of the other three victims remain withheld pending ongoing police investigations. Local residents have described the event as deeply heartbreaking, sparking fresh public debates over the extreme structural hazards of unregulated mining.
