The Accra High Court has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) a warrant to arrest Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The warrant was granted after EOCO applied to the court for permission to arrest the MP.
According to EOCO’s lawyers, the agency had made several attempts to secure Baffour Awuah’s voluntary attendance but had not been successful.
EOCO also told the court that it was concerned that documents linked to its investigation could be hidden, altered or destroyed.
The agency therefore asked the court for authority to arrest the MP and search for and seize documents connected to the investigation.
The case is linked to an ongoing investigation involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. EOCO had previously attempted to arrest Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on September 23.
However, Baffour Awuah has disputed EOCO’s account of events. He has explained that the investigation concerns SIC Life Savings and Loans, which his former law firm represented.
He has also stated that a representative of the law firm cooperated with EOCO on several occasions.
The latest court decision adds a new development to the ongoing investigation involving the MP and EOCO.
The warrant does not by itself establish that Baffour Awuah has committed a crime. The investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
