The Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, has officially been named the new Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Ghana’s Parliament. This elevation follows a major government reshuffle announced on August 7, 2026, by President John Dramani Mahama.
NDC General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey, alongside outgoing Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, confirmed the transition to the Builsa North lawmaker. The shift comes as Mahama Ayariga exits leadership to take up a cabinet position as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
President Mahama’s latest reshuffle also sees Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings nominated as Minister-designate for Environment, Science, and Technology. Meanwhile, Works and Housing Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been reassigned to lead the Ministry of Defence.
James Agalga brings deep experience to the front bench. As a four-term MP serving in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Parliaments, he previously served as Deputy Minister for the Interior under the earlier Mahama administration.
Until his new appointment, he chaired Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and held senior positions across several key parliamentary committees. A legal practitioner by profession, Agalga holds an LLB and LLM from the University of Ghana, alongside a Master’s degree in Conflict, Peace, and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
The appointment places a seasoned security and legal expert at the helm of parliamentary affairs as the government pushes its legislative agenda forward.
