President John Dramani Mahama has officially relieved Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson of his temporary dual oversight at the Ministry of Defence. The decision follows the appointment of Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as the substantive Defence Minister.
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the strategic changes on August 7, marking the first cabinet reshuffle in President Mahama’s second term. The move allows Dr Ato Forson to direct his full attention to fiscal management and economic stabilization.
Dr Ato Forson stepped up as Acting Defence Minister following the tragic military helicopter crash last year that claimed the life of Dr Edward Omane Boamah. Managing national economic recovery alongside military administration placed a heavy operational load on the Finance Minister.
Kenneth Gilbert Adjei moves from the Ministry of Works and Housing to take over national security duties. Having served as Deputy Defence Minister between 2015 and 2017, he brings proven security management experience back to the sector.
The restructuring also brings fresh momentum across other key ministries. Ahmed Ibrahim shifts from Local Government to lead Works, Housing and Water Resources. Former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga takes charge of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, while Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings steps in as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
Ghanaians expect this cabinet realignment to bring sharper administrative focus to national security and accelerate ongoing economic recovery efforts.
