A committee will be formed by early next week to determine compensation for people affected by the recent demolition at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.
The development was disclosed by La Dadekotopon MP and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Naa Odoley Sowah.
She made the disclosure during a parliamentary hearing on October 6, 2026.
The committee will include representatives from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), traditional authorities, beach management and the area’s Member of Parliament.
Naa Odoley Sowah said information on people affected by the demolition has already been collected.
However, the type and amount of compensation have not yet been determined.
The committee will assess the situation and make recommendations.
The process will also consider people who may need to be relocated. Others may receive financial compensation, depending on the outcome of the assessment.
The demolition at La Pleasure Beach began on October 2. Several structures were pulled down during an exercise involving security personnel.
Businesses and vendors operating in the area were asked to vacate the premises.
The demolition has raised concerns among affected businesses and residents, particularly over its impact on livelihoods.
SSNIT, however, said it sought the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat over what it described as persistent unlawful occupation and encroachment around the beachfront.
The affected area is located near the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
The committee is expected to review the circumstances of affected persons and determine the appropriate form of support or compensation.
Naa Odoley Sowah said she would continue to follow up on the process to ensure affected persons receive the support they are entitled to.
The final decision on compensation will be made after the committee completes its assessment.
