The Ministry of Health has officially dismissed a completely false report broadcast by South Africa’s public broadcaster, SABC. The foreign network claimed that Ghana had recorded thousands of Ebola infections alongside hundreds of deaths, triggering widespread concern across social media platforms.
The misleading claims originally appeared on SABC’s broadcast news ticker before being removed following intense public backlash. Ghanaian health officials have condemned the publication as irresponsible, confirming that the country remains completely free of Ebola.
The erroneous report broadcast by SABC falsely claimed that Ghana’s Ebola cases had risen to 2,300 with 930 reported deaths. The completely fabricated figures began circulating online during one of the network’s daily news bulletins, alarming viewers across Africa.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the Ministry of Health stated unequivocally that Ghana has recorded zero cases of Ebola Virus Disease. Health officials urged the public to completely disregard the misleading claims and ignore fake news on social media.
The ministry clarified that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh recently visited border points of entry, diagnostic laboratories, and treatment facilities as part of routine medical preparedness. These proactive inspection tours ensure that state facilities remain fully equipped for any potential public health emergency.
However, executing routine preparedness drills does not mean an active outbreak exists within our borders. State health experts maintain continuous surveillance across all sea, air, and land entry borders to guarantee early detection of viral hemorrhagic diseases.
Following immediate backlash from Ghanaian authorities and concerned citizens, SABC quietly removed the false ticker from its television broadcast. The South African network has yet to explain how such massive misinformation reached the screen or issue a formal public apology.
Public health experts warn that fake disease reports cause unnecessary panic, harm public confidence, and negatively affect international trade and tourism. Citizens should rely strictly on official updates from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service rather than sharing unverified rumors online.
