Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah from EOCO custody.

His call follows Baffour Awuah’s arrest after he voluntarily reported to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Thursday, October 1, 2026, to assist with an ongoing investigation.

EOCO later placed him under arrest. The agency said the MP is cooperating with investigators.

The investigation involves allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences.

EOCO has stressed that the allegations are still under investigation. The agency has also urged the public not to make premature conclusions about the MP’s involvement.

Afenyo-Markin has questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest. He has also raised concerns about the treatment of a sitting Member of Parliament.

The Minority Leader has previously argued that security agencies seeking to question or arrest an MP should engage the Speaker of Parliament and follow the appropriate parliamentary procedures.

The latest development follows an earlier attempt by EOCO officers to arrest Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on September 23.

EOCO said the attempt followed invitations issued to the MP in February. Baffour Awuah has disputed aspects of EOCO’s account.

An Accra High Court later issued a warrant authorising EOCO to arrest the MP. The court also authorised the agency to search for and seize documents relevant to the investigation.

After voluntarily reporting to EOCO on Thursday, the MP was escorted by investigators to his former law firm. EOCO officials were also expected to take him to his residence as part of the court-authorised searches.

Afenyo-Markin’s demand for Baffour Awuah’s release has added a parliamentary dimension to the ongoing investigation.

EOCO, however, maintains that it is conducting the investigation professionally and in accordance with due process.

The allegations against Baffour Awuah remain under investigation and have not been established by a court.

The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against Baffour Awuah have not been established by a court.
