The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has destroyed several cannabis farms at Siiru, a community near the Black Volta in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region.
The joint operation followed intelligence gathered by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service, which led the security team to suspected cannabis cultivation sites within the community.
According to NACOC, the team discovered cannabis plants at several locations. Some had already been harvested, while others were close to being harvested.
Further searches revealed that cannabis was being cultivated in incomplete buildings, in front of residential properties and alongside maize crops.
The findings suggest that the cultivation was taking place in different parts of the community rather than at one identified farm.
Following the exercise, the identified cannabis plants were destroyed by burning.
Residents Sensitised on Drug Cultivation
After the operation, officers from NACOC and the Ghana Immigration Service engaged community members in an education and sensitisation exercise.
The engagement focused on the dangers and consequences of cannabis cultivation and substance abuse.
Residents were encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and provide timely information that could help identify and prevent illicit drug activities in their communities.
The operation forms part of efforts by security agencies to tackle illegal drug cultivation and strengthen community involvement in the fight against drug-related activities.
NACOC has not provided details on the total quantity of cannabis plants destroyed or whether any arrests were made in connection with the operation.
The Commission’s announcement was published on October 31, 2026.
The joint exercise highlights the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation between security agencies in identifying and addressing suspected illegal activities across the country.
