The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has issued a firm directive to all party members to stop premature presidential campaign activities immediately.
The party leadership is now demanding that all members shift their focus toward supporting the administration’s core governance and “Resetting Agenda”.
This intervention follows a strategic meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama held on Friday, May 29, 2026. The leadership is prioritizing national stability and internal discipline over early succession battles.
The Council of Elders views premature campaigning as a major risk that could create unnecessary divisions within the governing party. By engaging in early maneuvers, certain members are distracting the organization from its primary mandate of national reconstruction.
According to the leadership, the NDC’s immediate priority must remain the delivery of its electoral promises. The party believes that every member should currently devote their energy and resources to improving the lives of all Ghanaians rather than chasing personal political ambitions.
The NDC constitution, specifically Article 42, provides a clear and exclusive framework for the selection of presidential candidates. Only the National Executive Committee (NEC) possesses the legal authority to set the official timetable and guidelines for future presidential primaries.
Because the NEC has not activated these processes, no individual or interest group is authorized to conduct presidential campaigns. This includes all forms of political organizing, such as endorsements and grassroots mobilization, which the Council has now ordered to cease.
The party is insisting that internal competition will be addressed at the appropriate time in the future. For the current period, the Council of Elders maintains that the collective responsibility of all party members is to serve the nation effectively.
The NDC is operating under the belief that internal contests can wait while the administration works to reset the country. The leadership is confident that preserving party unity is the most effective way to ensure the successful implementation of the mandate entrusted to them by the electorate.
