A violent confrontation linked to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has left 36-year-old Kwame Ayisi dead and a prominent traditional chief critically wounded. The bloody ambush occurred in the Asawinso enclave within the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
The tragic incident unfolded when the chief of Sefwi Asawinso “A”, Nana Kwasi Ayim II, led a local delegation into the protected Afao Hill Forest Reserve. The group intended to assess the severe environmental destruction caused by encroaching illegal mining operators.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the chief engaged the miners in a peaceful, logical dialogue, urging them to vacate the reserve. However, as the traditional delegation journeyed back to the community, heavily built armed men believed to be working for the galamsey operators ambushed them.
The gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, instantly killing Kwame Ayisi and inflicting severe gunshot wounds on the chief and six other youth. First responders rushed the critically injured victims to the Anhwiaso Community Hospital for emergency medical stabilization and treatment.
Assembly Member Frank Nelson Ackah has publicly condemned the shocking attack, noting that the community remains under immense psychological tension. Terrified residents are demanding immediate military and police intervention to clamp down on armed mining syndicates and restore local security.

The fatal ambush at Asawinso exposes the dangerous evolution of illegal mining from an environmental crisis into an armed national security threat. When traditional leaders face gun violence for protecting state forest reserves, the boundaries of law and order are severely compromised.
As the police service initiates forensic investigations into the attack, the priority must shift toward providing round-the-clock protection for vulnerable rural communities. Only a sustained, uncompromising security deployment can disarm these violent syndicates and safeguard Ghana’s natural heritage.
