Justice Edward Amoako Asante, the former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, has officially appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for his vetting process. This major constitutional procedure brings him one step closer to securing a seat on Ghana’s highest bench.
President John Dramani Mahama nominated the distinguished Court of Appeal judge alongside Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah and Tony Forson, the former President of the Ghana Bar Association. Following the nomination, Speaker Alban Kingsford Bagbin referred the three candidates to the committee for thorough screening.
During the session, lawmakers evaluated Justice Asante’s extensive judicial record and legal expertise. He brings a massive wealth of local and international experience to the apex court, having served three terms as the head of the regional ECOWAS Court of Justice until late 2024.
If the Appointments Committee approves his nomination and Parliament confirms the report, the total number of Supreme Court judges will increase from 18 to 21. Legal experts note that expanding the bench will strengthen the court’s overall capacity to handle pressing constitutional issues, complex civil matters, and criminal appeals efficiently.
The public continues to monitor the vetting proceedings closely as Parliament prepares to vote on the final report, determining whether Justice Asante will formally join the apex court.
