Look, we all know finding a good job in Ghana right now is not a joke. That is why the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) Ghana is making a big push for the government to step up and save some of our struggling state-owned enterprises (SOEs). They are pointing straight at big names like Volta Star Textiles Limited, Neoplan Ghana Limited, and Aluworks.

The ICU believes that bringing these once-powerful companies back to life is a smart move to create much-needed jobs, especially for the youth who have been sitting at home for years after finishing school. The General Secretary of the ICU, Morgan Ayawine, has been very clear about this: we need to stop relying so much on imported goods and start making things ourselves again.

Take Volta Star Textiles, for example. They used to be the main guys producing grey fabric for our local textile industry. Now, they are struggling, and we are using hard-earned foreign exchange to import the exact same materials from outside. It just does not add up, right? The union says fixing companies like this will not only keep money in the country but also boost our overall economic growth.

They are urging the government to inject the right financial resources and create a supportive environment, maybe even looking at a 24-hour economy model, to get these factories running at full speed. It is all about teamwork; the ICU says if the government provides the backing, the workers are more than ready to do the heavy lifting to turn these strategic national assets around. This sounds like a logical step toward solving some of our big unemployment issues while building a stronger Ghana.
