The recent demolition exercise at the Tema Newtown fish processing site has brought tears and confusion to many hardworking traders. The Tema East Sub Metro task force cleared the shoreline to stop poor sanitation practices. Officials from the Food and Drugs Authority even seized dried fish to protect public health.
Accra is hot but Tema is currently hotter for people in the fishing business. Hagan Tetteh is a dedicated fish monger who strongly described the demolition exercise as completely unjustified. He now joins other frustrated traders who continue to appeal for urgent financial support.
The situation is especially tough for citizens who traveled from far places to make a living. Enock Sam is a proud indigene of Winneba who depends on this fish business to survive. He says the demolition exercise at the Tema Newtown fish processing site may force him and his mother to return home. We all know nobody leaves their hometown just to come and struggle in a big city.
On the other hand, health officials brought pure logic to the table when they visited the area. They had to step in because some traders dried fish near open rubbish dumps. The task force also caught some individuals engaging in open defecation right near the shoreline. The authorities simply want a cleaner environment to prevent serious health issues.
While the government tries to clean the city, the local traders also need a suitable place to work. Fish processing brings money to many families and keeps the local economy moving forward. We hope city leaders and the traders find a peaceful agreement because people need to stay healthy to enjoy their hard earned money.
