Ghanaian Member of Parliament and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, has broken her silence after surviving a shocking and violent attack in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In a heartfelt statement, she revealed that the assault on her life was deliberate, calculated, and entirely unprovoked.

The incident, which has stirred strong reactions from both political observers and citizens across Ghana, occurred during what was supposed to be a peaceful community engagement. According to Hon. Koomson, the attackers arrived with a single intention — to eliminate her.
“They came with the intention to just kill me. I hadn’t provoked anyone, I hadn’t said anything offensive. I was only doing my job as a public servant and a representative of my people,” she recounted emotionally.
A Sudden Attack That Shook the Constituency
Eyewitnesses say the event began like any ordinary outreach activity. The Minister, known for her hands-on approach, was addressing community members on developmental projects and youth empowerment initiatives in Ablekuma North. However, chaos erupted when unidentified individuals, some reportedly armed, stormed the scene.
“They didn’t ask questions, they didn’t engage in any confrontation — they just attacked,” an eyewitness shared.
Fortunately, the Minister was quickly evacuated by her security team. Though shaken by the incident, Hon. Koomson has remained resolute in her commitment to serve her constituency and Ghana as a whole.
Political Tensions or Coordinated Crime?
While investigations are ongoing, the nature of the attack has sparked speculation about its motive. Some suspect political rivalry may have played a role, especially considering Ghana’s increasingly competitive political climate as the 2024 elections draw nearer. Others believe the attack could be linked to local power struggles or criminal activity designed to destabilize her influence.
Hon. Koomson, who has represented Awutu Senya East in the past, remains a strong political figure known for her firm stance on youth empowerment, fisheries development, and women’s participation in governance.
She has called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and without bias to uncover those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
Ghanaians Call for Enhanced Security for Public Officials
In the aftermath of the attack, many Ghanaians have expressed concerns about the safety of public officials. On social media, citizens have demanded that the state increase security for Members of Parliament, especially during fieldwork in remote or politically sensitive regions.
Security analysts have also weighed in, warning that attacks of this nature, if not swiftly addressed, could discourage politicians from engaging directly with their communities — a cornerstone of democratic governance.
“If politicians no longer feel safe interacting with the people who elected them, it creates a serious gap in representation and erodes public trust,” one analyst noted.

A Call for Unity and Calm
In her public statement, Hon. Hawa Koomson urged her supporters to remain calm and not retaliate. She emphasized the importance of peace, rule of law, and national unity.
“We must not let this moment divide us or ignite violence. I have full confidence in the Ghana Police Service and the justice system. Let us all remain law-abiding citizens as we await the results of the investigations,” she said.
She also reiterated her dedication to the development of Ablekuma North and Ghana at large, assuring the public that this incident will not deter her from fulfilling her duties.
The attempted attack on Hon. Hawa Koomson serves as a troubling reminder of the rising threats facing political figures in Ghana. Her courageous response and call for peace stand as a powerful message to the nation.
As investigations continue, all eyes will remain on how authorities handle the case and whether justice will be served swiftly and transparently. The people of Ablekuma North — and indeed, all Ghanaians — await answers, and above all, assurance that such acts of violence will not become a norm in the nation’s political landscape.
