A mobile money agent, known in his community as Colombo, was tragically shot and killed during a robbery in Aflao, located in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, on the evening of Monday, April 28.

Shocking Robbery at Closing Hour

According to reports by journalist Sylvia Awumey, the victim, Christopher Ahordo, was preparing to close his MoMo shop at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement Factory, around 6:15 p.m.—over an hour past his usual closing time of 5:00 p.m.

While closing up, Colombo was approached by two armed men dressed in long robes and with their faces covered. Eyewitnesses say the assailants were carrying pump-action shotguns.

They reportedly seized a bag believed to contain a significant amount of money. As they fled the scene, one of the robbers fired at Colombo, striking him in the chest.

Sadly, Colombo died instantly. Witnesses could not intervene as the robbers fired indiscriminately while escaping into a nearby bush.

His body was later retrieved by community members and transported to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary. The incident has been reported to local police, who have since launched a full-scale investigation.

MoMo Robberies on the Rise

This incident is the latest in a worrying trend of mobile money-related robberies in Ghana. Similar attacks have been reported in the Ashanti Region, with many resulting in fatalities.

“MoMo vendors across the country are increasingly vulnerable, and this latest case is another painful reminder of the need for tighter security measures,” residents shared.

Authorities Step In

The municipal police are currently leading the investigation. No arrests have been made yet, and the robbers remain at large.

What Can Be Done?

With the increasing number of fatal MoMo robberies, there are growing calls for:

  • Improved street surveillance
  • Stricter regulations on vendor hours
  • Increased police visibility in high-risk zones

Stay safe and vigilant.
