AfDB 2025 Presidential Election: Five Candidates Battle for Top Leadership Role
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is set to elect its next president today, as the Bank’s Board of Governors, made up of finance and economy ministers and central bank governors from 81 member countries, prepare to cast their votes.
This critical election will determine the leader who will shape the strategic direction of Africa’s premier multilateral financial institution over the next term.

List of AfDB 2025 Presidential Candidates:
- Amadou Hott – Senegal
Former Minister of Economy, Planning and International Cooperation with a background in energy and finance. - Samuel Munzele Maimbo – Zambia
A seasoned financial expert and former World Bank director known for his work in global finance and development strategy. - Sidi Ould Tah – Mauritania
Current Director-General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), with strong credentials in development banking. - Mahamat Abbas Tolli – Chad
Governor of the Bank of Central African States, bringing deep experience in regional monetary policy and economic governance.
The AfDB presidency is determined through a dual voting process involving both regional and non-regional member countries. A candidate must secure at least 50.01% of the vote in both categories to be declared the winner.
The Board of Governors Steering Committee officially approved the five candidates by the nomination deadline of 31 January 2025, and the final list was publicly confirmed on 21 February 2025.
With Africa facing growing economic challenges and opportunities—from climate change to infrastructure development and digital transformation—the next AfDB President will play a central role in shaping the continent’s financial and developmental future.
