Dr Ken Ashigbey has dropped a heavy truth bomb regarding the fight against illegal mining across local communities.The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines revealed that certain local government assemblies collect unofficial fees from galamsey operators.Instead of protecting water bodies, rogue officials allegedly profit from environmental destruction by taxing illegal mining equipment.
Exposing this corruption is crucial because state institutions cannot fight an enemy operating from within their own ranks.Local authorities who trade permits for cash undermine national directives meant to save our dying forest reserves.Dr Ashigbey strongly argued that mere administrative dismissals are not enough punishment for public servants who sabotage the state.True deterrence requires swift criminal prosecution to show that nobody is above the law.
Ghanaians must demand total accountability from every municipal leader entrusted with community development funds and resources.Protecting our environment requires clean leadership rather than double standards at the grassroots level of governance.
