Eastern Regional House of Chiefs holds historic workshop on dispute resolution
The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs recently held a significant two-day training workshop at the Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort on September 24 and 25, 2024.
This inaugural event brought together 11 paramount chiefs and traditional council leaders under the theme “Training on Matters Relating to Chieftaincy,” aimed at equipping members with essential knowledge regarding chieftaincy issues, legal frameworks, and dispute resolution.
The workshop was a brainchild of Nene Sakite II, the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, who expressed his excitement at the successful realization of this long desired initiative.
In his opening address, he urged all Ghanaians to promote peace ahead of the upcoming national elections scheduled for December 2024.
Over the course of the workshop, legal experts, including Dominic Cecil Hammond and His Lordship Justice Frederick A.W.K. Nawurah, delivered presentations on crucial topics such as chieftaincy litigation, customary arbitration, and the supervisory jurisdiction of the High Court over traditional adjudications.
Participants engaged actively, seeking clarifications and sharing insights based on their experiences.
Concerns were raised by attendees regarding the management of stool lands, the environmental impact of illegal mining, and the growing trend of divisive rhetoric in the media.
The chiefs emphasized the need for government action to safeguard natural resources and uphold cultural values within the community.
The workshop concluded with the election of new officers to lead the House for the next four years. Nene Sakite II (Manya Krobo) was re-elected unopposed as President, alongside Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II (Okwahuhene), who continues as Vice President.
Additionally, three members— Okotwaasuo Kantamanto Oworae Agyekum III (Akyem Bosome Omanhene), Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, (Okyenhene) and Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III (Akwamuhene) —were elected to represent the House at the National House of Chiefs.
The event marked a crucial step toward strengthening the role of traditional leaders in governance and community development, fostering unity and cooperation among the chieftaincy institution in the Eastern Region of Ghana.m
